Oswego, NY: During the month of June, Services to Aid
Families (SAF), a division of Oswego County Opportunities (OCO), Inc., will be
hosting its 14th Annual White Ribbon Campaign.
SAF is the certified Rape Crisis Center and
licensed Domestic Violence Program for Oswego County. The White Ribbon Campaign began in Canada in
1991 after a tragic incident, in which 14 college women were singled out and
murdered based on their gender. After
this event, approximately 100,000 men, throughout Canada, began wearing White
Ribbons as a demonstration that they will not commit, condone or stay silent
about violence against women. Today the
White Ribbon Campaign has spread around the world and is currently recognized in
55 different countries.
During this years’ campaign,
SAF, along with the participation of local businesses, human service agencies,
and members of the faith community, will have ribbons available for a $1
donation. All proceeds of the ribbons
support the domestic violence shelter, known as the SAF House, of Oswego
County. During the month of June, SAF
staff will attend local religious services to speak and raise awareness about
the goals of the White Ribbon Campaign and to stop violence against women and
children.
SAF is encouraging all members
of our community, especially men, to wear a white ribbon and make a statement
that violence against women will not be ignored or tolerated. Ribbons can be purchased at the OCO Main
Office, Lakeview Lanes, Mimi’s Italian Restaurant, Backstreet Books &
Bistro, Sunshine Produce, Oswego County Catholic Charities and the YMCA, all
located in the city of Fulton. In
Oswego, ribbons will be available at the Midtown Plaza OCO office, the WIC
office, and the Oswego County HUD office.
Ribbons can also be found at the Nice & Easy Grocery Shoppe in Sandy
Creek, Rural & Migrant Ministries of Oswego County in Richland and Arbor
House will be distributing ribbons in Hannibal.
SAF would like to thank all of
the businesses and agencies for their participation in this years campaign.
