OSWEGO, NY- Harborfest is actively recruiting volunteers for the 2008 installment of
the festival.
There is currently a wide range of options and locations for
those interested in participating. Volunteering for Harborfest is great way to
meet new people and make a vital contribution to the community. Each volunteer
plays an intricate role in ensuring the success of the festival each year.
According to the festivals volunteer coordinator Chrystal Hoyt, “It takes more
than 600 volunteers to help make Harborfest happen. Volunteers are needed for
all Harborfest venues, functions and times to provide information to visitors
about the event, serve as trolley hosts, answer the phones, set up the parks,
staff memorabilia booths, sell 50/50 tickets and carry out
many other tasks that help make the
festival happen.”
To compliment the intangible benefits
associated with volunteering Harborfest is also providing volunteers the chance
to win prizes. Harborfest business member
Murdock’s Bicycles and Sports is generously donating a new
bicycle for a raffle that will –more-
be exclusively offered to
volunteers. To show their continued appreciation for volunteer efforts
Harborfest will submit each volunteers name into the drawing for each shift
they work. Immediately following the festival the volunteer committee will
select a name at random from the drawing and announce the winner. The 2007
Harborfest bike raffle winner Katherine Clemens has been volunteering for over
ten years and especially enjoys the various performances because it gives her
the chance to, “dance with my red hat on.” When asked for a comment on her past
experiences with the festival she said, “I love volunteering for Harborfest so
much that if I had to I’d ride my bike all the way from Sterling to get to the
festival!”
Harborfest invites
all individuals interested in volunteering to submit an application as soon as
possible; positions are assigned on a first come-first serve basis. Training
sessions are scheduled for July 15, 17, and 22 from 5pm-7pm at the McCrobie Civic
Center on Lake Street. To properly prepare for the festival volunteers must
attend one of the training sessions.
For more information on volunteering contact Chrystal Hoyt at the
Harborfest offices by calling 343-6858 or stop by the Volunteer Center in the
McCrobie building at 41 Lake Street in Oswego.
Slated
for July 24th - 27th, the 2008 edition of Harborfest will
feature plenty of food, fun and entertainment as venues on both Oswego’s east
and west sides will be used to deliver the excitement. A diverse variety of entertainment will be
featured on stages throughout the city of Oswego including, the NRG Family
Stage at East Park, the Budweiser Rock Stage on East Second Street, and the
Labatt Lakeview Stage in Breitbeck Park.
With the Route 104 Bridge closed for repair this summer, be sure to plan
accordingly so that you don’t miss the events you want to see. The Utica Street Bridge will be open as will
the pedestrian walking bridge located just north of Utica Street. Visit the Harborfest website at www.oswegoharborfest.com for the
