OSWEGO, New York (March 19, 2008) - The traditional vision of a
locally owned, family business is usually one that includes a small retail
shop, home-based business, or farm. The business of creating abstract documents
from researching local clerk documents, however, is a 30-year-old family
tradition and success story for Oswego Valley Abstract Corporation.
“We
are truly a family business,” said Oswego Valley Abstract Vice President Joseph
Johnson. “All seven of our employees are either friends or family. In this type
of environment, if you’re not a friend when you start working here, you will
be. Everyone lives and works here in Oswego County as well, so we are very much
a local business.”
Oswego
Valley Abstract provides abstracts of title on the history of property and
other legal matters for attorneys, financial institutions, individuals and the
government. The nature of their business requires a large amount of research
through local municipal and county records that can sometimes be a “low-tech”
endeavor.
“The
Oswego County Clerk’s Office has been working at making the last 40 years of
public records available digitally, but many of the properties we prepare
abstracts for hold the need for us to research county records even farther
back,” Johnson said. “It involves going through decades of different styles and
procedures of record-keeping.”
The
company began to experience financial difficulty in the 1990s when Pam Noyes,
who had worked for the company for several years, decided to take over
ownership of the company and began trying to turn things around.
“A
change of ownership was needed at the time to find new ways of doing things,”
remarked Oswego Valley Abstract Owner and President Pamela Noyes. “We slowly
turned things around and kept the business healthy. We continue to grow and
bring in new clients.”
To
celebrate their 30th year in business, Oswego Valley Abstract
Corporation will launch a new branding initiative in 2008, that will include a
new corporate logo, marketing program, and website.
Oswego
Valley Abstract serves customers in Oswego, Cayuga, Onondaga and Jefferson
counties with two offices located in the City of Oswego at 112 East Bridge
Street, as well as on the first floor of the Oswego County Building.
“Our
real strength is our local connections,” commented Johnson. “We have an office
in the same building with the County Clerk so when our clients need something
quickly; we can get someone there as fast as possible.”
Their
clients appreciate the ability of Oswego Valley Abstract to quickly respond to
their needs.
“Abstracts
are the cornerstone of many real estate and title proceedings,” commented C.
Earl Ledden, Esq., an attorney in Pulaski, NY and long-time customer of Oswego
Valley Abstract. “The two things attorneys look for in a good abstract company
are accuracy and timeliness. I’ve known both of the owners and their families
at Oswego Valley Abstract for many years and have appreciated their help. The
accuracy in the work they do is why I have stayed with them for many years.”
Johnson
stresses the local aspects of the business. All of the taxes paid by the
company remain in the community, and, their employees are residents of the
county.
“Everyone
working here has a stake in the success of our company and the community,”
Johnson said. “You don’t see that kind of local commitment as often as you used
to in the business world. We’re proud to be a part of Oswego County and this
region.”
